Melbourne weather, explained

How to read the Melbourne forecast

A good forecast is really three views at once. The current panel tells you what it feels like outside right now, which is what matters before you head out the door. The hourly strip is for planning the next part of your day: when the cool change arrives, when the wind picks up, when it is warm enough to walk. The seven-day outlook is for the week ahead, and it is most reliable in the first three or four days. In Melbourne especially, treat the hourly strip as your primary guide — conditions can shift dramatically within a single afternoon.

Melbourne weather and the cool change

Melbourne's weather is defined by its position on the edge of Port Phillip Bay, backed by the Dandenong Ranges to the east and open to cold Southern Ocean fronts from the west. The cool change — a fast-moving cold front sweeping up from the south-west — is Melbourne's most distinctive weather event: temperatures can drop 15°C or more in under an hour, often arriving mid-afternoon on hot days. North-westerly winds in summer drive the hottest spells, while the bay moderates temperatures in inner and bayside suburbs compared to the western and northern growth corridors.

What the UV index means in Melbourne

Melbourne sits at 37 degrees south, but its UV index is higher than many people expect. On clear summer days the UV regularly reaches extreme levels of 11 or above, and the index peaks at solar noon rather than at the hottest part of the afternoon. A common Melbourne mistake is waiting until it feels hot to apply sunscreen — UV burns regardless of temperature. Below 3 is low risk. From 3 to 7 means sunscreen is worthwhile. Above 8 means a hat, sunscreen and shade are all genuinely necessary, not optional.
